World Aids Day 2023

. As we commemorate World AIDS Day 2023, we reflect on the theme for this year: “Let communities lead.” This theme emphasizes the pivotal role that communities play in addressing the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS, and how their active involvement can lead to better prevention, care, and support for those affected.

The Power of Community Engagement:

Communities have always been at the forefront of the HIV/AIDS response. Their knowledge, resilience, and ability to mobilize resources make them indispensable partners in the fight against this devastating disease. When communities are meaningfully engaged, they can drive change, challenge stigma and discrimination, and ensure that the needs of those most affected by HIV/AIDS are addressed effectively.

Empowering Communities:

Empowering communities to lead the response to HIV/AIDS involves providing them with the necessary tools, resources, and support. It means recognizing and respecting the expertise and insights that community members possess, as they often have a deep understanding of local contexts, cultural nuances, and barriers to access. By involving them in decision-making processes, planning, and implementation of HIV/AIDS programs, we can ensure that interventions are tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals and communities.

Key Areas of Community Leadership:

1. Prevention: Communities play a crucial role in prevention efforts by disseminating accurate information, promoting safe behaviors, and challenging harmful social norms. Peer-led initiatives, community-based education, and outreach programs have proven to be effective in preventing new infections.

2. Testing and Treatment: Community-led testing and treatment initiatives can help overcome barriers to accessing healthcare services. By providing HIV testing and counseling services within communities, individuals are more likely to get tested, receive their results, and access timely treatment and care.

3. Support and Care: Communities provide vital support networks to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Through community-based care programs, support groups, and counseling services, they offer emotional, social, and practical assistance, reducing the burden of isolation and stigma.

4. Advocacy and Policy: Communities have a powerful voice in advocating for policy changes, funding allocation, and the removal of legal and social barriers that hinder effective HIV/AIDS responses. By amplifying community voices, we can create an enabling environment for comprehensive and inclusive HIV/AIDS programs.

Conclusion:

On World AIDS Day 2023, we acknowledge the immense contributions of communities in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The theme, “Let communities lead,” serves as a reminder that empowering communities is not only essential but also transformative in addressing the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS. By recognizing and harnessing the expertise, resilience, and agency of communities, we can create a world where HIV/AIDS is no longer a threat. Let us unite in our efforts to support and amplify community leadership, working together towards an AIDS-free future.

International Youth day 2023

The Role of Skill Development in Enhancing Employability, Entrepreneurship, and SelfReliance Among the Youths

A message of hope to young Nigerian Youths to Mark the “International Youth Day ”

Barr. Sam Otoboeze (Grand Patron &Chairman, Board of Trustees, Africa Youth Community)

The times are hard no doubt, however, there is still hope in the horizon. A day like this is a day for sober reflection not only for the Nigerian youths; African youths or the youths across the globe but certainly, moreso for parents and older folks. That things are hard The Role of Skill Development in Enhancing Employability, Entrepreneurship, and Self-Reliance Among the Youths – A message of hope to young Nigerian Youths to Mark the “International Youth Day 2023” by Barr. Sam Otoboeze (Grand Patron & Chairman, Board of Trustees, Africa Youth Community) The times are hard no doubt, however, there is still hope in the horizon. A day like this is a day for sober reflection not only for the Nigerian youths; African youths or the youths across the globe but certainly, moreso for parents and older folks. That things are hard is not just the problem of the youths alone, who have the energy but have no work; who possess several certificates that cannot give them employment; that are the leaders of tomorrow but not sure how to survive till tomorrow. The problems are more for the more advanced adults, whether parents or not, who cannot afford to sleep because the youths are restively awake due to hunger and deprivation. It therefore goes that the adults who have denied the youths sleep will not also sleep. The times are therefore obviously hard and optimally challenging. Whether we believe it or not, the youths remain the hope and despair of the society. The good news is that no matter how bad the situation may be, there’s still hope in the horizon. The hope is that nature has made it that no skilled person will die of hunger! This publication wouldn’t have come under a better Theme than: “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World” neither could it have come at a better time than now, to shed light on the importance of skill development in enhancing employability, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting self-reliance among young individuals. By getting equipped with the right skills, the youths are automatically empowered to thrive in a competitive world and become essential catalysts for positive changes in the society. The job market has become increasingly competitive, making it crucial for young people to possess relevant skills and competencies. Every year, the universities and other degree awarding institutions, graduate thousands of young people, who have little or no skills in demand or as required by the industries that may employ them. There is therefore a compelling need to bridge the gap between formal education and education for employment through skills acquisition to either create self employment opportunities or to be gainfully employed elsewhere. By acquiring skills in emerging sectors such as technology, crafts, digital literacy, social services provision, data analytics, and sustainable development, farming etc, young individuals can increase their chances of securing gainful employment and building successful careers, which will in turn reduce the issue of crime and criminalities among young people. With the high rate of unemployment worldwide, young people must begin to think inward, and creatively too, to establish their own businesses through Entrepreneurship which provides the young ones the opportunity to create their own pathways to success, while making a positive impact on the society. Skill acquisition plays a pivotal role in nurturing entrepreneurial mindsets and providing the necessary tools to turn innovative ideas into thriving businesses. Skills in virtually all areas of human endeavors, whether in the area of critical thinking, problem-solving, financial literacy, marketing, farming or networking etc, empower young entrepreneurs to navigate through challenges, seize opportunities, and contribute to economic growth. The importance of skill acquisition extends beyond immediate employment or entrepreneurial endeavors into self-sustainability. In a rapidly evolving world, continuous learning and adaptability with patience are essential for long-term success. By cultivating a culture of lifelong learning, young individuals remain relevant and competitive in the job market. Skills development programs, vocational training, online courses, and mentorship opportunities provide the necessary framework for young people to enhance their skills on regular basis. While we encourage young people to acquire trending skills and nurture their own business, we must also be reminded that the larger society has a role to play. Building a conducive environment for skill development requires collaboration among governments, educational institutions, private sector entities, and civil society organizations. It is essential to invest in quality education, establish vocational training centers, promote apprenticeships and internships, and provide mentorship programs. Public-private partnerships can play a pivotal role in creating inclusive ecosystems that will foster skill acquisition, entrepreneurship, and employment opportunities for young people. In a nutshell, as a nation, both the young and the old, the leaders and led should be focused on how to empower the young ones for gainful employment and self sustaining opportunities through skill training. It is of paramount importance that the young people should be sufficiently empowered to navigate through the challenges of the modern world and seize opportunities for personal and professional growth. By emphasizing the importance of skill development in enhancing employability, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting self-reliance, we can create a future where the youths are equipped with the necessary tools to succeed. I therefore, invite everyone to come together to invest in skills development programs and create an enabling environment that empowers young individuals to shape their destinies and contribute to a prosperous and sustainable world.

Happy International Youth Day and cheers to all our young people.

World Give Something Away Day

Imagine a day when you could clean house and get rid of clutter, show someone that you care, gift small things to strangers, and generally making the world a better place. Yes, this day does, in fact, exist and on July 15 we celebrate National Give Something Away Day!

WHEN IS NATIONAL GIVE SOMETHING AWAY DAY 2023?

National Give Something Away Day is celebrated on July 15.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL GIVE SOMETHING AWAY DAY

It’s better to give than to receive, and this is the aim behind National Give Something Away Day. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” doesn’t literally mean junk or trash, but items that can serve someone else better. The day encourages people to give freely to others without expecting anything in return. This is also a good way to declutter and pass on things that no longer fit us or are useful to us.

Most of us undoubtedly have way more items than we need. National Give Something Away Day was established on July 15, 2015, by Linda Eaton Hall-Fulcher, a self-proclaimed giver. On the day’s Facebook page, Linda advocates giving back to the world. According to her, this day is for everyone who cares. It advocates for giving to friends, family, and the less fortunate; for mindful consumerism; and for being more aware of our carbon footprint.

Giving is the simplest act to exist that can brighten up another’s day, and at times really bring about a positive change. Whether it is something small like giving a compliment, giving your friend a jacket of yours that she really likes, or donating clothes to the less fortunate, these little things can have a big impact.

Even though giving is a selfless act, the reward goes both ways. We benefit from feeling good about giving and making someone’s day, and at the same time, we also let go of items that we no longer need and are just lying around. We also learn to be grateful for all our blessings and it makes us feel like responsible people who are improving the community.

NATIONAL GIVE SOMETHING AWAY DAY ACTIVITIES

  1. Buy a meal or drink to give to someonePay for the person behind you in line at the coffee shop. Buy a to-go meal and hand it to the homeless person outside. Pack a small purse or backpack that you don’t want anymore — with things like socks, snacks, and toothbrushes and gift it to a homeless person. Compassion is a virtue that needs nurturing.
  2. Donate clothing to a thrift storeCheck all the closets in your house… are there things there that you haven’t worn in years? Giving your useful clothing away gives someone with less means the opportunity to look sharp, maybe even at their job interview.
  3. Give flowers awayFlowers are a simple way to brighten someones day — with color, smell, and a breath of greenery to bring nature to their desk or table. Give flowers to your co-workers, your housemate, or your significant other.

World Population Day

2023 Theme: Unleashing the power of gender equality: Uplifting the voices of women and girls to unlock our world’s infinite possibilities

What women and girls want matters.

They make up 49.7% of the global population, yet women and girls are often ignored in discussions on demographics, with their rights violated in population policies.

This pervasive injustice keeps women and girls out of school, the workforce and leadership positions; limits their agency and ability to make decisions about their health and sexual and reproductive lives; and heightens their vulnerability to violence, harmful practices and preventable maternal death, with a woman dying every two minutes due to pregnancy or childbirth.

We must advance gender equality to create a more just, resilient and sustainable world. The creativity, ingenuity, resources and power of women and girls are fundamental to addressing demographic and other challenges that threaten our future, including climate change and conflict.

When women and girls are empowered by societies to exert autonomy over their lives and bodies, they and their families thrive, as the UNFPA 2023 State of World Population report illustrates.

UNFPA brings its data, experience and stories to support women and girls around the world, and World Population Day gives us an opportunity to highlight the need to advance gender equality to help realize the dreams of all 8 billion of us on our planet.

World Population Trends

It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world population to grow to 1 billion – then in just another 200 years or so, it grew sevenfold. In 2011, the global population reached the 7 billion mark, it stands at almost 7.9 billion in 2021, and it’s expected to grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 10.9 billion in 2100.

This dramatic growth has been driven largely by increasing numbers of people surviving to reproductive age, and has been accompanied by major changes in fertility rates, increasing urbanization and accelerating migration. These trends will have far-reaching implications for generations to come.

The recent past has seen enormous changes in fertility rates and life expectancy. In the early 1970s, women had on average 4.5 children each; by 2015, total fertility for the world had fallen to below 2.5 children per woman. Meanwhile, average global lifespans have risen, from 64.6 years in the early 1990s to  72.6 years in 2019.

In addition, the world is seeing high levels of urbanization and accelerating migration. 2007 was the first year in which more people lived in urban areas than in rural areas, and by 2050 about 66 per cent of the world population will be living in cities.

These megatrends have far-reaching implications. They affect economic development, employment, income distribution, poverty and social protections. They also affect efforts to ensure universal access to health care, education, housing, sanitation, water, food and energy. To more sustainably address the needs of individuals, policymakers must understand how many people are living on the planet, where they are, how old they are, and how many people will come after them.
